Could you be our next Treasurer?

Costume Society Treasurer

The Costume Society seeks a treasurer to manage our financial affairs.

We are the UK’s largest and longest-running fashion and dress history network. We bring together academics, makers, designers, curators, conservators and anyone interested in all aspects of clothing including social history, fashion, uniform and performance costume – past and present, around the globe.

Our fund-raising activities include an annual two-day conference and our academic journal, Costume, published twice yearly by Edinburgh University Press.

We have an investment fund which provides the income for our five annual awards, which offer from £500 to £5,000 for research, conservation, curatorial and design-related activities. We are looking for someone with financial experience to join our Executive Committee and handle the practical aspects of our finances, including maximising our investments, as well as to provide the financial vision and direction that will enable the Costume Society to expand our charitable activities.

Overall

• Oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice. • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place. • Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation. • Oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits.

Specifically

• Liaise with relevant committee members and officers to ensure the Society’s financial viability. • Make trustees and officers aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them. • Report on finances at the Executive Committee meetings, held three times a year (usually late Sept, mid Jan and early May), and AGM (usually June or July). • Oversee the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year. • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place, ie:, cheque signatories, purchasing limits, purchasing systems, petty cash/ float, etc • Manage the Society’s investments appropriately. • Appraise the financial viability of plans, proposals and feasibility studies. • Lead on appointing and liaising with auditors/an independent examiner. • Undertake bookkeeping duties ensuring posting and bookkeeping are kept up-to-date. • Maintain the petty cash system and regularly process petty cash claims. • Arrange payments to creditors as appropriate and arrange appropriate signatures on payments. • Make the necessary arrangements to collect payments from debtors and bank payments promptly. Abilities we seek: • Knowledge of current fundraising and finance practice, relevant to charitable organisations. • Knowledge of bookkeeping and financial management. • Good financial analysis skills. • Ability to communicate clearly. • An interest in the Costume Society’s activities and goals is desirable, but not essential.
