The ways in which fabric can be cut and manipulated to form garments has been both a fascination and passion throughout Janet's career. After gaining a degree in Fashion and Textiles from the Gloucestershire College of Art and Design, she became assistant designer to Thea Porter. Following this, she was the first designer employed by fashion company Monsoon, to produce a range of garments for Western women using traditional Indian fabrics and prints. During this time, she worked across the globe, in India, Afghanistan and Romania, as well as in the UK. This ultimately led to designing and marketing her own successful range of cocktail and eveningwear, taking inspiration from these diverse cultures, with garments made both in India and the UK.
In 1994 Janet re-trained as a textile conservator with Historic Royal Palaces and for 18 years, worked as part of their Conservation and Collection Care team, conserving tapestries, state beds and costume. Her extensive experience in fashion allowed her to achieve a particular expertise in historic costume conservation and display, which she developed for Historic Royal Palaces and subsequently many other leading historical organisations.
She resigned her position at Historic Royal Palaces in 2012 to focus on and further develop this expertise, working with museums as a freelance consultant in the conservation, interpretation and display of historic dress. She also designed training programmes and ran workshops around the subject for educational institutions and heritage organisations, in addition to beginning work on her book of the same subject, titled Perfect Form, which has just been published.
We look forward to seeing you all there virtually!
