Join us on this exclusive visit to get up close to exquisite fans. This is a chance to see In Performance: Fans of Theatre, Music and Dance, a beautiful exhibition showing at one of London’s hidden gems: The Fan Museum in Greenwich led by the museum's costume expert.
After an introductory talk about 'In Performance: Fans of Theatre, Music and Dance' by curator and Costume Society Trustee Helen Persson Swain, there will be time to see the exhibition, handle exquisite fans, followed by tea and biscuits in the world famous Orangery.
The exhibition presents a wide range of fans which portray and are a part of the performing arts. The fans of theatre focus strongly on the popularity of Commedia dell’Arte, a 16th century Italian form of theatre, depicting a troupe of characters including Harlequin, Colombine and Pierrot. While the section on dance emphasizes the use of fans as accessories to dance around the globe, such as dance cards, provide instruction for dancers or simply souvenirs of dance forms. This exhibition aims to take its audience on a journey of discovery, blending a diverse assortment of objects into- it is hoped- a coherent and thought-provoking whole. Curated by Mary Kitson, consulting curator.
Costume Society members will be guided through the exhibition and shown exclusive highlights by curator/keeper and Costume Society Trustee Helen Persson Swain. Members will get up close to and handle exquisite fans from the museum collection, as well as view the permanent collection.
Places are limited. Ticket prices: £32 and £40 for non-members.
