Weston-Super-Mare Museum, 2017

In 2017, the award was awarded to Weston-Super-Mare Museum to conserve a bright pink siren suit for exhibition ‘Beside the Sea: Conservation of Women’s Leisurewear’.

A Daphne Bullard Award of £500 was made to Weston–SuperMare Museum for the conservation of a bright pink siren suit worn by local resident Mildred Webb. The all-in-one siren suit became a staple garment for women during the Second World War as a garment which was quick and easy to put on as well as providing warmth.

Worn by Weston-super-Mare resident, Mildred Webb, this bright pink siren suit not only holds great significance in having a local provenance but also in highlighting the way women’s fashions changed with their changing role in society. Women were now employed both in the armed services, as well as uniformed employment and with this their fashion needs changed. Overalls began to become increasingly popular with women working in industrial areas, as well as those who were now required to undertake their own housework. The all-in-one siren suit became a staple for women during the Second World War as a garment which was quick and easy to put on, as well as providing warmth and modesty during an air raid.
