Vestologie: Celebrating the Jacket at Printemps Haussmann, Paris

16 September 2024, by Judith Hepner

In this week's blog post, blog contributor Judith Hepner reviews 'Vestologie'; the jacket-focused exhibition at Printemps Haussman, Paris, is on show until October 13th.

Attention, fashion enthusiasts! Until October 13, 2024, Printemps Haussmann, one of Paris’ historic Grands Magasins, is shining the spotlight on one of the most versatile pieces in any wardrobe: the jacket.

The multi-brand luxury department store is an architectural marvel, founded in 1865. The building is a late nineteenth-century architectural phenomenon, with an ornate building façade and monumental multicolored glass domed ceiling. Once inside, shoppers and visitors are at once enveloped in history, and simultaneously transported into a contemporary world of fashion, luxury, and beauty celebrating more than three thousand brands. With an attitude of constant evolution and homage to all things modern, Printemps takes its name from the French word for Spring. This symbolizes renewal and transformation—just like the jacket itself, which has continually evolved through the decades to remain a timeless fashion icon.

This latest free exhibition, “Vestologie”, unfolds on the sixth floor, beneath the Printemps iconic dome, where curators Sylvie Marot (Commissaire Général d'Exposition) and Marlène van de Casteele (Commissaire Scientifique) have created a space in which fashion history and contemporary design collide most spectacularly.

The exhibition unfolds over 550 square meters, taking visitors on a journey through the rich history and evolution of the jacket, offering a fascinating glimpse into how it has influenced and adapted to every era of fashion. Visitors take in eight thematic sections exploring the jacket’s aristocratic beginnings, rebellious phases, and ultimate transformation into a modern must-have. From Dior’s timeless “Bar Jacket” to the futuristic designs of Paco Rabanne (1934-2023) and the eponymous French luxury design house started by Andre Courrèges (1923-2016), "Vestologie" showcases a variety of reinterpreted anthology pieces that highlight the jacket’s ability to continuously evolve while maintaining its status as a fashion staple.

This isn’t just a collection of jackets; it’s a deep dive into how a single garment can define cultural moments and set new standards for style. The exhibition features contributions from some of fashion's most visionary designers, including designer Alexander McQueen (1969-2010), whose pieces redefine what it means to wear a jacket today. It’s a powerful reminder that fashion isn’t just about trends—it’s about storytelling, and the jacket has plenty to say.

For those in Paris, this exhibition is a must-visit. Located at 64 Boulevard Haussmann, 75009 Paris (+33 01 42 82 50 00).

Judith has previously reviewed exhibitions for The Costume Society blog, including 'La Mode En Movement' at Pallais Galliera. Revisit her post on our blog.
