Join us for an exclusive behind the scenes discussion and book launch with Veronica Main MBE, author of Endangered Craft: Straw Plaiting: Heritage Techniques for Hats, Trimmings, Bags and Baskets.

Join the Costume Society for an exclusive discussion and book launch with Veronica Main MBE, author and the most experienced traditional straw plaiter in the UK. Veronica will be discussing her new book, Straw Plaiting: Heritage Techniques for Hats, Trimmings, Bags and Baskets published by Herbert Press with Costume Society members.

The book has been heralded as ‘a must-have for anyone interested in working with straw and an astonishing contribution to the preservation of this endangered craft.’ Offering a comprehensive insight into the history of straw plaiting, the craft was once used around the world for centuries but is now listed as Critically Endangered, this wonderfully illustrated book is published in partnership with Heritage Crafts. ‘Straw Plaiting’ draws on more than 50 previously unpublished patterns, helping readers to unlock the history and preserve the craft of straw plaiting.

Veronica was awarded an MBE in the 2021 New Year’s Honours list for Services to Straw Hat Plaiting and Endangered Crafts, and has appeared on TV shows such as BBC’s Made in Great Britain sharing her expertise.

The discussion will be hosted by Costume Society Costume Journal Editor Christine Stevens.

Join us on Wednesday 6th September 2023 from 7 pm – 8pm online. Please book your ticket via Eventbrite (members keep an eye out for the link from Beth soon) and we can’t wait to see you there.
