Join the Costume Society for an exclusive book launch talk with Kate Strasdin discussing her new book The Dress Diary of Mrs Anne Sykes.
In 1838, a young woman was given a diary on her wedding day, in which she started to keep a fabric scrapbook. Her name was Mrs Anne Sykes. Nearly two hundred years later, the diary fell into the hands of Kate Strasdin, a fashion historian, museum curator and guest expert on The Great British Sewing Bee.
In The Dress Diary of Mrs Anne Sykes, Strasdin unravels the story of a life – and an era – told through fabric swatches, taking us all the way from the mills of Lancashire to the port of Singapore. Fragments of cloth become windows into Victorian living: pirates in Borneo, the complicated etiquette of mourning, poisonous dyes, the British Empire in full swing, rioting over working conditions and the terrible human cost of Britain’s cotton industry.
Join us on Wednesday 15th March 2023 from 7 pm – 8pm online. Following this exclusive discussion with Gemma Esvelt we are excited to launch a book giveaway to several lucky members.
