The Costume Society Reading Group September - Louise Chapman on Cabinets of Costume

Monday, 6 September 2021

The next session of The Costume Society Reading Group is on Monday 6 September when you can join Louise Chapman, who will discuss her article, "Cabinets of Costume: Renegotiating Participation Through Practice, Object-Based Study and 'Ghosts' of an Assemblage of Dress", Costume 2020

We are excited to announce that our next Costume Society Reading Group Session will be on Monday 6 September, 7.30-8.30pm BST when Louise Chapman joins us to talk about her article exploring ideas around object based study of dress.

We can't wait to discuss Louise's Costume article, "Cabinets of Costume: Renegotiating Participation Through Practice, Object-Based Study and 'Ghosts' of an Assemblage of Dress", which appears in Costume 2020, Vol 54 No2, pp222-241.

In her article, Louise explores ideas around archival dress and how object based study of historical dress collections can inform and inspire current practice.

The exhibition Cabinets of Costume was undertaken as part of an international conference, Culture, Costume, and Dress at Birmingham City University (BCU) in May 2017. Its aim was to highlight two study collections held at BCU — the first, the Historical Dress Archive, which includes the Kate Elizabeth Bunce objects, and the second, the Art and Design Archives.

Focusing on the Historical Dress Archive the initiative was developed to enable undergraduates across the faculty of Art, Design and Media at BCU to study extant historical dress, creating five representations or ‘ghosts’ of the objects of study. The initiative and exhibition offered an opportunity for a student-academic partnership to share the practices of object-based study as a creative catalyst, to inform costume practices as a live project.

Remember as a member you can access a digital version of  Louise's article via our extensive Costume archive.

We will be recording the session and will send full details about this with the log in details for the session.

The session is free for Costume Society Members, but places limited so be sure to book via Eventbrite.

We look forward to seeing you there!
