The Fashion World of John Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk

Wednesday, 4 June 2014

Connoisseur Visit: 4th June 2014

An exclusive guided tour is on offer to Costume Society members with Leila Hasham, Assistant Curator at the Barbican.

The Fashion World of John Paul Gaultier is the first major exhibition to celebrate the cutting-edge creations of this world famous French couturier. With more than 180 couture and ready-to-wear garments theatrically displayed, it shows how Gaultier has shaped the look of fashion over the past 35 years with his, at times subversive, witty, inspiring and always beautifully made clothes.  Some are inspired by different cultures and countries, others by collaborating with artists including Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol and David LaChapelle.  There are also examples of his iconic creations for stage and film notably the infamous conical bra and corsets Madonna wore during her 1990 Blonde Ambition World Tour

Footage of catwalk presentations, music videos, films and dance performances bring the exhibition to life.
The exhibition has been organised by Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA), in collaboration with Maison Jean Paul Gaultier, Paris.
